University of Michigan Health-Sparrow is addressing the growing nursing and respiratory therapy shortage in Mid-Michigan through the UM Health-Sparrow Scholars Program, a workforce initiative built with Scholars Network. Eligible students enrolled in nursing or respiratory therapy degree programs can receive up to $40,000 in loan repayment upon graduation, licensure, and employment with University of Michigan Health-Sparrow.
"As healthcare leaders, we have a responsibility to rethink how we support the next generation of healthcare professionals. Launching this program is one way we're taking ownership of that by investing earlier and more intentionally in the people who will deliver care in the years ahead."
Kathleen Marble, Chief Nursing Officer, UM Health-Sparrow
Through employer-funded financial support, structured guidance, and early integration into the organization, the program prepares and connects students well before they begin their careers, so they can focus on clinical training rather than financial burden.
Program highlights
- Up to $40,000 in loan repayment for eligible nursing and respiratory therapy students
- Employment commitment with University of Michigan Health-Sparrow upon graduation and licensure
- A structured pathway from education to employment
Why it matters
The program is designed to reduce the financial barriers that keep students from entering or completing clinical programs, strengthen recruitment by engaging students earlier in their education, support long-term retention through early connection and commitment, and keep workforce development rooted in the local community.
"Healthcare workforce challenges don't start at the point of hire; they start when students are deciding whether they can afford to pursue and stay in a clinical career. By aligning education, financial support, and employment from the outset, programs like this create a more sustainable pathway for students and a more reliable workforce solution for health systems."
Dr. Sam Maron, Founder, Scholars Network
As the program grows, it is expected to expand opportunities for students and strengthen the healthcare workforce across Michigan.
